April ninth – Saturday, and tenth – Sunday, in Japan:
The GSE 2005 Exchange Vacation commenced on April 9th . My GSE Team Customers – Harry Abbott, Julia Vasileyva, Antonio Verges and Monica Koller — collected at the gate to board the aircraft at San Francisco Worldwide Airport to begin our journey to Fukuoka, Japan. It was a prolonged flight – 14 hours with a layover in Nagoya. When we arrived, we have been welcomed by our Japanese hosts including Mika, Izumi and Ai – and it was enjoyable to see the indicator welcoming the GSE Group that they experienced posted at the arrival gate. It was about 7PM in the night on Sunday – 3AM on Saturday at property – and they took us by car via the streets of Fukuoka to our hotel for two nights, the Nishitetsu Grand Hotel. We felt an earthquake after shock as we checked into our rooms – Hisa San said that it was a “welcome shock”. The staff crashed for the night, in anticipation of a total working day tomorrow.
April 11th – Monday:
Up early this early morning – completely ready to commence the working day, and in this big town I could hear the roosters crooning. I walked a handful of blocks down the road for my first cup of Starbucks coffee in Japan (have to confess it tasted excellent) and loved the bustle on the principal avenue of Fukuoka. On with my crew blue blazer, and armed with several gifts to take to our hosts (like Kona coffee from Teri in fifty percent pound luggage) – we assembled for a Japanese type breakfast again in the resort. I 1st observed how gracious it is below – gentle bowing, smiles, a lot of to escort you – and a people relationship that looks you in the eye and sees you (I like that). I am sensation relaxed right here.
Oh, my gosh – we are blessed with encounters. The crew customers are elated. We met with Mika San and she outlined each of our programs while we are below, the host family members that we will be keeping with, and the locations that we are going to check out. They say that the months of April and May possibly are the very best months to be right here – blessed us. Fukuoka is a town of one.7 million people and the island of Kyushu is about 280 miles long and 350 miles vast. We will leave Fukuoka tomorrow and go to Rotary Areas six and seven which are much more rural.
The cherry blossoms ended up in entire pressure as we headed down the river this early morning. Our 1st stop was the American Consulate. We satisfied with the Principal Officer & Consul for the U.S., Joyce Wong. She talked about her duties to the Point out Section and her assignment here for 3 a long time. Also about how popular Fukuoka is due to the fact people below have a good outlook and welcoming hospitality. The Prefecture (which is like our condition) is acknowledged for increasing teas, sweet strawberries, fruits and vegetables – and the ideal seafood in Japan. It creates a single third of the world’s semi-conductors and is part of the Silicon Sea Belt (like our Silicon Valley) and produces about one million autos that locate their way to the U.S. industry. Fukuoka was named the most livable metropolis in Japan, she states. We remark on what a lovely and clean city that it is.
Following we’re off to the Fukuoka West Rotary Club lunch meeting – and most notable, there are no girls in this club – envision that. We satisfy Dr. Hirohata, who is the incoming District Governor – and he says the he has a Japanese/Boston accent! A RI Director, Mr. Suenaga is from this Club. There are about 140 members, and the club is 50 years aged – but not the oldest club in the Metropolis. By the way, the District has about 3700 Rotarians, and significantly less than 1% are females – some thing to contemplate right here. The video that Harry place jointly highlighting every single of our team members labored properly to show who we are, given that we are constrained in our language interaction. It was a very stiff men’s Club – with formality that we didn’t understand.
We ended up gained in the Governor’s business office in the afternoon (ie. the equal of “Arnold’s” business office in California) and spoke with the Director of Worldwide Affairs – and learned about the Prefecture and the Japanese govt.
The women received dressed tonight with substantial shoes as portion of their “search” – and when at the cafe we have been barefoot like all the relaxation. Our hosts experienced a social gathering for us at the restaurant Kanzan – and it was pretty. Our hosts had been so exciting – they giggle a great deal, notify jokes and are extremely playful – by contrast. One host told about his first journey to the U.S. He purchased a grapefruit on the program and he predicted to get a grape fruit – and what came to him was something that seemed like an orange – we all laughed difficult at that one particular. We had been hosted by Tomoshige Tachibana, his spouse and daughter – and he is the recent District Governor. He spoke fondly about meeting our District Governor, Ron Sekkel and Cindy – and we offered him with the reward from our Rotary District.
There were about thirty people at the celebration, including some of the family members that we will be remaining with. And, Kenji Ogawa (Ken) was there – he’ll be the incoming team leader when this District sends us a crew next 12 months. His staff has already been picked and we will be assembly them afterwards. We’re constantly shocked at the attractiveness of the presentation of the foods right here – and know that the diet regime is going to take a couple of lbs off of all of us. The presentations are in Japanese, so we miss some of the conversation that isn’t going to get interpreted – and a lot of of the folks we meet are not conversant in English – but it really is far better than our Japanese. The evening opened with a beautiful conventional Japanese dance – and provided plenty of sake and beer to make the evening merry. It was a quite total 1st day.
April twelfth – Tuesday:
After breakfast and baggage in the lobby – we headed for the prepare station to depart Fukuoka and travel into the countryside. Dr. Maruyana took us on the prepare to Omuta and the Omuta Rotary Club. The space was established western type, and with about 60 – and again – no girls in this Club. Julia, Monica and I stood out in the area. As Izumi (Dr. Maruyana) and I talked about ladies in Rotary – he pointed out to me that it is not only an issue of gender but also 1 of “course” that has limited girls in Rotary right here. He was variety and stated that there are not quite several of me right here – indicating that lady have not generally experienced the entry to the financial framework right here that I have experienced in the U.S. Also that females are not deemed in the higher course of the society that Rotary chooses its membership from right here. Intriguing – it is hard for me to maintain my tongue. I point out to the Club as I speak that my Club looks extremely various than theirs – that my Club has 50% girls. And more, that a lot of guys in America had problems with this adjust, that some remaining Rotary in protest – but that they typically love girls in Rotary now. They shake their heads – and someone interprets that they are expressing, no females below. They ask what classifications of females be part of our Club. They never consider that this will alter in the potential. Izumi states that he is radical – that he thinks that this modify is essential and that the world’s future demands it.
Again on the teach – much like our trains only very clear – we continue down the line to Kurume City. The residences are obtaining even bigger (with Shogun-type roofs) and there are beautiful mountains in see. https://www.guidefrancophoneaujapon.com/ We are likely to Nishi-Nippon shinbun (Newspaper) exactly where we satisfy with a reporter who asks about us and strategies to do an write-up in the biggest newspaper. It truly is a wander from there, with the wind blowing challenging, to Town Corridor and the Mayor’s Place of work. The Mayor joins us and we discover that the photo to accompany the newspaper post is taken with the Mayor in his business office and his heat welcome.
Izumi has a lovely property with some western looking rooms, and a place that we obtain in and sit cross legged about the desk. Japanese sweets and tea is served and computer systems in mass appear out to see what we’ve recorded for the day. Embarrassing to inform but I went upstairs to the toilet, and pushed the improper button on the rest room – and h2o shot all over the ceiling – think about. They have it all more than us in toilets right here – they’re heated and do all sorts of items.
Final night time at the dinner, Mr. Tanaka served as a Japanese metaphor for me. He place a chopstick on the desk – then supposed with his brain, as he claims – and moved that chopstick 6 inches in the air without having touching it. But that wasn’t all, he borrowed someone’s view – and by putting his fingers on each sides of it – and intending with the concentration of his thoughts – he moved the time ahead by an hour! Remarkable.
Harry San, Monica San, Julia San, Antonio San and I go off to our host households from Izumi’s home and began our Japanese remain. From listed here you will be listening to from each of us separately – with exclusive experiences and I’ll continue to speak about the factors that we are doing together. So blessed – I’m keeping with the Tanaka’s. Considerably baggage is moved and everyone goes off happily, with my cell cellphone amount as necessary.
Ai picks me up, with the Tanaka’s and we are headed to a quite special Japanese style cafe – and much more little plates of foodstuff than I can try to eat. Rapidly, though, following evening meal – we choose that we are going to head to the Hot Springs – wow – am I prepared for that. We enter a developing with a women’s aspect and a men’s aspect – peel off to get in the warm pools, of course – it soothed. By cab we drove to Ogori and the hundred calendar year previous residence had been the Tanaka’s dwell. I’m staying in a room to myself with a futon mattress and slept really comfortably. In the night we chortle a good deal as the translation goes back again and forth – with Ai translating – since the Tanaka’s don’t speak a lot English. I believe that his business is importing and exporting, but not confident – but they vacation and Mrs. Tanaka has numerous of the same brand names of garments that I recognize, from her excursions – such as a beautiful Italian match that she was putting on. Once I was in their residence, all had been very relaxed and genuinely hospitable – we are properly cared for below.
This post is a series — so study on — and several times adhere to in our splendid experience!
